2030 Agenda
The 2030 Agenda is the United Nations’ universal action plan for Sustainable development, adopted by the General Assembly in 2015 for implementation through 2030. It contains 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 targets, integrates economic, social, and environmental dimensions, and organizes its ambition around people, planet, prosperity, peace, and partnership.
In simple terms
Formally titled Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the framework applies to all countries while recognizing different national circumstances, capacities, and priorities. Its goals and targets are described as integrated and indivisible: progress or failure in one area can affect others. Governments have primary responsibility for implementation, supported by international cooperation and participation from other stakeholders. Follow-up and review occur at national, regional, and global levels, with the High-level Political Forum serving as the central UN platform. The Agenda is a shared policy framework, not a certification for organizations.
Why it matters
The 2030 Agenda provides a common language for connecting poverty, health, equality, Decent work, climate, biodiversity, institutions, and finance. It helps governments and organizations examine trade-offs and contributions across interconnected goals. Mapping an activity to an SDG icon does not demonstrate impact: credible use requires a stated target, baseline, affected groups, timeframe, evidence, and attention to negative as well as positive effects.
Example
For example, a fictional city uses the 2030 Agenda to connect housing, public transport, air quality, employment, and climate plans. It selects relevant targets and indicators, publishes a baseline, involves affected communities, and reports both progress and setbacks. Displaying several goal icons without those steps would not show implementation.
