Decent work
Decent work is the International Labour Organization’s framework for productive work that delivers fair income, workplace security, social protection, rights, voice, equality, and human dignity. Its four interconnected pillars are employment creation, rights at work, social protection, and social dialogue, with gender equality treated as a cross-cutting objective.
In simple terms
As of 2026-08-12, decent work remains an active organizing framework of the International Labour Organization. It connects opportunities for productive employment with rights at work, social protection, and social dialogue. The pillars should be considered together: job creation alone is insufficient if work is unsafe, coercive, discriminatory, insecure, or without worker voice. A living wage concerns one important level of remuneration, while decent work covers a much wider set of conditions and institutions. Specific legal duties still come from applicable labour standards and national law, not from the phrase by itself.
Why it matters
Work is a central route through which economic development affects well-being and inequality. The framework helps sustainable procurement and climate policy consider job quality as well as job quantity. It also places prevention of modern slavery and child labour within a broader labour-rights agenda, rather than treating severe exploitation as isolated compliance incidents.
Example
A renewable-energy programme reports jobs created but also measures contracts, wages, safety, training access, discrimination, freedom of association, social protection, and worker participation. It engages employers’ and workers’ organizations to address gaps. The programme therefore tests whether growth supports decent work instead of assuming every green job is automatically a good job.
How it differs
Living wage
Decent work is a four-pillar labour framework covering employment, rights, social protection, and dialogue; a living wage is one context-specific benchmark concerned with remuneration.
