Responsible sourcing
Responsible sourcing is the practice of selecting and managing materials, products, suppliers, and business relationships to prevent and address adverse environmental, human-rights, labour, and integrity impacts. It combines risk-based due diligence with purchasing decisions, supplier engagement, contractual expectations, traceability, monitoring, capability support, and remedy appropriate to the sourcing context.
In simple terms
Responsible sourcing applies sustainability expectations to what an organization buys and how it buys it. It may include origin information, risk screening, supplier dialogue, purchasing terms, capacity building, performance monitoring, escalation, and remedy. Supply chain due diligence supplies the management cycle for identifying and addressing impacts, while human rights due diligence keeps risks to people central. A certificate can be useful evidence, but it does not remove the need to understand scope, exclusions, audit limits, changing conditions, or harms that the scheme does not cover.
Why it matters
Price, lead times, forecasts, and contract practices can create or worsen supplier pressure, so responsibility is not limited to policing vendors. Responsible sourcing can support a living wage and reduce harms related to environmental justice or climate justice when buyers align commercial decisions with stated expectations. It also gives procurement teams concrete levers for prevention rather than relying on disclosure after harm occurs.
Example
An apparel buyer identifies high-risk materials and recruitment practices, sets realistic lead times, pays suppliers predictably, and funds corrective action where capability is limited. It verifies priority outcomes with worker input and updates risk maps. Ending a relationship is considered when necessary, but the buyer first assesses whether disengagement would worsen harm.
