Sustainability reporting assurance

Sustainability reporting assurance is an independent engagement in which a qualified practitioner obtains evidence about sustainability information and expresses a conclusion under stated criteria and an assurance standard. The engagement can provide limited or reasonable assurance, depending on its objective, procedures, and applicable requirements.

ISSA 5000 is issued, with adoption and effective dates determined by jurisdictions; EU sustainability-assurance duties arise under the CSRD framework as amended and transposed.

In simple terms

Management prepares the sustainability information; the assurance practitioner evaluates it against suitable reporting criteria, gathers evidence, considers risks of material misstatement, and issues a report. Limited assurance uses less extensive procedures and conveys a lower level of assurance than reasonable assurance. ISSA 5000 is designed for sustainability topics and multiple reporting frameworks. Under the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, applicable EU reports are subject to assurance, while detailed scope and timing follow current law and national implementation.

Why it matters

Assurance can increase confidence that disclosed metrics and narratives were prepared using stated criteria and supported by evidence. It can expose weak controls, unclear boundaries, and unsupported claims before publication, including claims made in a Transition plan. It does not guarantee that a company is sustainable, predict future performance, or replace a reader's Materiality assessment; the assurance report's level, scope, exclusions, and conclusion remain essential.

Example

A company prepares disclosures under European Sustainability Reporting Standards. An independent practitioner tests selected data, evaluates controls and estimates, checks consistency with the reporting criteria, and issues a limited-assurance conclusion. Readers examine which entities, indicators, and periods were covered; they do not assume that Sustainability reporting assurance validates every corporate activity or claim.

ISSA 5000 is issued, with adoption and effective dates determined by jurisdictions; EU sustainability-assurance duties arise under the CSRD framework as amended and transposed.

Applicability: The required assurance level, reporting population, practitioner eligibility, standard, and start date depend on jurisdictional adoption, current EU amendments where relevant, and national implementation. ISSA 5000 supports both limited and reasonable assurance but does not itself impose a reporting duty.
