Reporting, Finance & Governance

Sustainable finance

Sustainable finance is the incorporation of environmental, social, and governance considerations into financing and investment decisions to support durable economic activity and manage sustainability-related effects. The term can cover public and private capital, different financial products, and objectives ranging from financial risk management to financing positive environmental or social outcomes.

In simple terms

The field includes decisions by banks, investors, insurers, governments, companies, and development institutions. It can influence which activities receive capital, on what terms, and with what information or safeguards. Examples include sustainability-focused funds, green or sustainability-linked bonds, climate finance, and transition finance. The label alone does not guarantee an outcome: definitions, eligibility criteria, investor objectives, safeguards, measurement methods, and disclosure rules differ. Users should examine the product or policy's actual terms rather than assuming that every sustainable-finance approach has the same purpose.

Why it matters

Finance can enable cleaner infrastructure, resilient communities, responsible business practices, and economic transition, while unmanaged sustainability risks can affect asset values and financial stability. Clear definitions and credible information help direct capital more effectively and reduce greenwashing. They also let users distinguish broad sustainable-finance goals from narrower climate, transition, or impact objectives.

Example

For example, a bank may integrate climate and human-rights risks into credit analysis, issue a green bond for eligible projects, and offer transition finance to a high-emitting client with a credible plan. Each activity belongs to sustainable finance but has different criteria, controls, and expected outcomes.

How it differs

Climate finance

Sustainable finance can address environmental, social, and governance considerations broadly. Climate finance is the narrower flow of finance supporting climate-change mitigation, adaptation, or both.
