Land-use change
Measurement answer
What this metric measures
Area converted between named ecosystem or land-use types, retained by polygon, before-and-after type, conversion class, date basis, and operational or supply-chain boundary.

Reporting boundary
One non-duplicated spatial conversion event between named ecosystem or land-use types. Natural-ecosystem conversion since a cutoff remains separate from modified-to-modified reporting-period conversion.

Value structure
Dimensions and units
- Unit
- Structured table — see field-level units
- Reporting basis
- Cutoff-to-date or reporting-period conversion flow, explicitly labelled
Unit meaning: This metric is reported as a structured table; each field carries the unit stated in the table fields below.
Table fields and units
- Site or product, country, polygon, starting state, ecosystem classification, and boundary
- Land or ecosystem type before and after conversion, and conversion class
- Converted area (ha — hectares in the named polygon; 1 ha = 10,000 m²)
- Conversion date or interval, cutoff or reference date, and reporting period
- Direct or estimated data, method, source, uncertainty, and deduplication key
Published dimensions
- Site or product, polygon, before and after type, conversion class, date, cutoff, and boundary

Disclosure form
No single formulaPopulate the structured fields from qualifying source observations and retain each field-level unit, boundary, status, and method; do not collapse the disclosure into one calculated value.

Evidence and status sources
Sustopedia checked each record-specific claim directly against primary publisher material. Labels distinguish current measurement authority from future compatibility and corroborative, legal, edition, or method status context. Corroborative evidence can support a stated limitation but cannot establish the core measurement by itself.

Source-edition basis: Effective GRI 101: Biodiversity 2024 conversion profile and binding ESRS E4-5 under Regulation (EU) 2023/2772.
- Name site or product, country, polygon, starting state, ecosystem classification, and before-and-after types.
- State converted area in hectares for the named polygon, where 1 hectare equals 10,000 square metres.
- State conversion date or interval, cutoff or reference date, and operational or supply-chain boundary.
- State direct or estimated data, method, source, uncertainty, and reporting period.
- Deduplicate overlapping polygons and keep cutoff-based and reporting-period conversion profiles distinct.
Record-specific limitations
- Land cover and land use are different classifications and cannot be silently substituted.
- Area does not express ecosystem condition, fragmentation, species effect, or enterprise attribution.
- Supply-chain estimates may be coarse, and repeated observations of one conversion are not new area.
Interpret this metric with the stated reporting boundary, period convention, value shape, and unit. Results prepared with different boundaries or conventions may not be directly comparable.
Measurement evidence supports the core record-specific claims described above. Corroborative evidence can support limitations, while compatibility and status sources provide their separately labelled context. None of these cards by itself determines an organisation's legal applicability, filing readiness, assurance status, or compliance conclusion.
