Formula
Plant heat rate = thermal energy input to the plant ÷ electricity generated by the plantApply the source-defined TNFD sector-guidance method within the stated reporting boundary. The source specifies a standalone plant-level thermal-efficiency outcome and its unit. It is not the same construct as any shortlisted metric. A structured table preserves the required plant-level dimensionality and avoids inventing an undisclosed portfolio aggregation.
Variables
| Symbol | Variable | Definition | Unit |
|---|---|---|---|
Q | Thermal energy input | Thermal energy supplied to the applicable power generation plant during the measurement period. | Btu |
E | Electricity generated | Electricity generated by the applicable power generation plant during the measurement period, using the disclosed gross or net basis. | kWh |

Evidence and status sources
Sustopedia checked each record-specific claim directly against primary publisher material. Labels distinguish current measurement authority from future compatibility and corroborative, legal, edition, or method status context. Corroborative evidence can support a stated limitation but cannot establish the core measurement by itself.

Source-edition basis: TNFD sector guidance, Final English sector guidance collection through August 2026 (17 documents).
- Disclose the heat-input basis used for the reported Btu value, including higher heating value or lower heating value where applicable.
- Disclose whether electricity output is gross or net generation.
- Disclose the reporting boundary for each plant, including treatment of combined heat and power and auxiliary loads where applicable.
- Disclose the measurement, calculation, and data-source approach used to determine plant heat rate.
Record-specific limitations
- Heat rate is an operational efficiency indicator and does not independently quantify total energy use, emissions, generation output, or lifecycle impacts.
- Comparability depends on consistent heat-input basis, electricity-output basis, operating conditions, and treatment of combined heat and power.
Interpret this metric with the stated reporting boundary, period convention, value shape, and unit. Results prepared with different boundaries or conventions may not be directly comparable.
Measurement evidence supports the core record-specific claims described above. Corroborative evidence can support limitations, while compatibility and status sources provide their separately labelled context. None of these cards by itself determines an organisation's legal applicability, filing readiness, assurance status, or compliance conclusion.
