ESG investing
ESG investing is the use of environmental, social, and governance information within investment analysis, selection, ownership, or portfolio construction. It is an umbrella label rather than one strategy: approaches can include ESG integration, screening, thematic investment, stewardship, or combinations, with objectives that may differ substantially.
In simple terms
Some investors use ESG factors mainly to improve their understanding of risk and return. Others exclude specified activities, select leaders, pursue sustainability themes, or use voting and engagement to influence companies. Products may combine several approaches. ESG ratings are inputs, not objective facts: providers choose different scopes, data, assumptions, and weights. Investors should therefore examine the mandate, investment universe, benchmark, methodology, stewardship practices, evidence, and reported outcomes rather than inferring a particular ethical position or real-world impact from the ESG label alone.
Why it matters
Environmental change, labor practices, governance failures, and regulation can affect investments, while investment decisions and ownership practices can also influence companies and markets. Precise strategy descriptions help beneficiaries understand what a product is designed to achieve and reduce greenwashing. They also reduce confusion with impact investing, which intentionally seeks measurable social or environmental impact alongside financial return.
Example
For example, a fund manager integrates carbon costs, worker turnover, and board controls into valuation, excludes tobacco under a client mandate, and engages portfolio companies on transition plans. Those are distinct approaches within ESG investing and should be disclosed separately with their objectives and limitations.
How it differs
Impact investing
ESG investing may use sustainability information primarily to improve investment decisions and does not necessarily target additional real-world outcomes. Impact investing intentionally seeks measurable positive social or environmental impact alongside financial return.
