Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures
The Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) provides voluntary recommendations for organizations to identify, assess, manage, and disclose nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks, and opportunities. Its fourteen recommended disclosures are organized around governance, strategy, risk and impact management, and metrics and targets.
In simple terms
TNFD treats biodiversity and wider nature as more than a list of environmental risks. Organizations examine how they depend on ecosystem services, how their activities affect nature, and how those relationships create risks or opportunities. The recommendations support assessment across operations and value chains and include attention to locations, because nature-related issues are place-specific. TNFD also provides additional guidance and a LEAP assessment approach. Adoption is voluntary unless another authority incorporates it, and the framework does not itself determine whether an activity is environmentally sustainable.
Why it matters
Businesses and financial institutions depend on water, soils, species, climate regulation, and other ecosystem services, while their decisions can degrade or restore those systems. Comparable disclosure can inform ESG investing, governance, risk assessment, capital allocation, and accountability. Location-specific analysis also helps prevent global averages from hiding severe impacts or dependencies in sensitive places.
Example
For example, a food company maps sourcing locations, identifies dependencies on pollination and water, assesses impacts on habitats and species, evaluates operational and market risks, and reports governance, strategy, assessment processes, metrics, and targets under the current TNFD recommendations and relevant guidance.
