Stakeholder engagement

Stakeholder engagement is an ongoing process through which an organization shares information and negotiates, consults, or otherwise interacts with people or groups affected by, interested in, or able to influence its activities. Meaningful engagement is two-way, timely, accessible, responsive, and adapted to participants’ circumstances and potential barriers.

In simple terms

Stakeholder engagement begins by identifying relevant stakeholders, especially people whose rights, livelihoods, environment, or safety may be affected. The organization then provides understandable information, listens to concerns, records commitments, responds to feedback, and follows up over time. Timing matters: engagement conducted before key decisions can influence outcomes, while a one-off presentation after decisions is not equivalent. The appropriate format depends on context, power differences, language, accessibility, and risk. Human rights impact assessment and Materiality assessment can use engagement, but neither should reduce affected people to a source of data.

Why it matters

Good engagement can reveal impacts, knowledge, priorities, and practical constraints that internal analysis misses. It can improve due diligence, reduce avoidable conflict, and make decisions more informed and legitimate. Materiality assessment also becomes more credible when representative stakeholders can participate safely and the organization responds to what it hears. Attendance numbers or consultation events alone do not establish that the process was meaningful.

Example

For example, before changing water use near several communities, a fictional company maps affected groups, provides accessible project information, meets them at suitable times, records concerns, changes design options, and reports back on decisions. The process remains open through implementation so new impacts can be raised and addressed.

How it differs

Materiality assessment

Stakeholder engagement is the interaction process with affected or interested groups; Materiality assessment is an evaluation process that may use engagement as evidence when determining significant sustainability matters.
